T his
is the first of size volumes describing the flora
of the Arabian Peninsula and the Socotra archipelago.
Examining all the native flowering plants and
ferns (3500-4000 species),as well as major cultivated
and amenity plants of economic importance. the
flora covers Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, the United
Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, beginning
here with an extensive introduction to the area
as a whole. Sections on topology and geology,
climate, vegetation, floristics, phytogeography
and conservation are followed by accounts of approximately
700 species. Each species is mapped individually,
with notes on ecology and distribution, and there
are illistrations and keys to aid identification.
It is a systematic study which is set to become
the essentail referfence sources on the Arabian
