The
Arabian Peninsula covers some 2.7 million km².
It is more or less rectangular in shape and tilts
gently from its highest part along the Red Sea in
the west, downwards to the Arabian Gulf in the east.
It is a region of diverse topography ranging from
rugged mountains through vast sand and rock deserts
to luxurainlty vegetated, mist-covered mountains and
highly productive areas of ancient terraced argriculture.
There are no permanent rivers and only few permanentr
streams in the highest and wettest areas of the mountains.
