The United Arab Emirates is an arid country of about 83.000 km2 in area, located at the south-western tip of the Arabian Peninsula. It has two coasts, the western, which extends along the Arabian Gulf for about 600km, and the eastern, which runs for about 75 km along the Gulf of Oman. Furthermore, there are several offshore islands in the Arabian Gulf.

The United Arab Emirates is a tropical / subtropical desert country located in the south eastern corner of the Arabian Peninsular between latitudes 22° 30' and 26°30' N, and longitudes 51° and 56° E. It has the shape of an acute triangle with an area of about 83.000 km2 (Fig.1). The coastal and inland borders of the UAE extend for about 1740 km adjacent to Saudi Arabia in the South and South West, Oman in the East and North. The Arabian Gulf is the natural border in the North, and in the East there is the coast to the Gulf of Oman. The UAE consist of seven Emirates, formerly the Trucial States, namely Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al Quwain. Abu Dhabi is the largest Emirate and it occupies about 84% of the total area, whereas the other Emirates are much smaller: Dubai 5%, Sharjah 3.3%, Ajman 3%, Umm al Quwain 1%, Ras al Khaimah 2.2%, and Fujairah 1.5%.
