The
Sultanate of Oman, like other oil producing countries
in the Middle East, is developing at a very fast rate.
Asphalt roads, housing and other amenities are being
built to fulfil the needs of a growing nation. There
are as yet no documented threats to the flora. However,
environmental pressures such as overgrazing due to increased
livestock holdings and development projects make it
imperative that a plant list is compiled presenting
the known status of the flora to identify the endemic,
regional endemic, rare and threatened species and their
areas of distribution. The object of making such a list
is not only to provide ready information on the status
of a particular plant species, but also to provide information
on regions of high endemism, areas with rare species
and species of special biological interest. This information
is indispensable to the formation and management of
nature reserves and the formulation of conservation
strategies. Data on the distribution pattern of species
is vital for any development plans in the country and
successful monitoring of species at risk.
